Nancy is a teacher and preacher with a love for people, a passion for helping people to find, free and claim their natural speaking voices, and a heart for women especially who have struggled to use their voices. Her primary work is as professor of speech communication in ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary where she also teaches preaching and worship.

Nancy’s new book, Women’s Voices and the Practice of Preaching is the result of many years in the classroom wondering and investigating why so many women struggle to use their voices. Her primary answer is that women struggle to use their voices because the voice is a full body instrument and many women are disconnected from their bodies. She identifies three primary reasons her women students have been disconnected from their bodies: that few women feel as though their bodies are acceptable, that gender norms have made it difficult for women to speak of their experience and perspectives, and that women who have been abused, sexually or physically, do not feel their bodies are safe. She suggests a process to begin reclaiming the body and freeing the voice. Click on the image of the book and you will be redirected to Amazon.com. Nancy’s earlier work on preaching from Paul is featured in the book, If You Cannot Preach Like Paul. Here she claims that our problem with preaching from Paul is that we find ourselves trying to say what Paul said only to find that some of the things he said are so objectionable we end up rejecting Paul altogether. Nancy claims if we try to do what Paul was doing when he said those things, such as church planting, encouraging a fledging congregation, proclaiming Christ as Lord, or inspiring unity in the church, we will find we want to do the same things, but might end up saying something different.
